Greenwich firm invests in benchmark solar project for synagogue in Washington, D.C. metro area
Greenwich, CT —December 22, 2010—Altus Power Management, the Old Greenwich, CT-based company that invests in and owns clean energy generation systems, announced the signing of a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a 44,000-watt roof-mounted solar photovoltaic system with Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation of Bethesda, Maryland. The system will be owned and operated by Altus Power with Adat Shalom purchasing the clean energy produced at a discount. Kenergy Solar, an Annapolis MD based solar service solutions provider, is the originator and developer of the project and will oversee project management.
The solar array will include 180 American-made panels for a 44 kilowatt solar electric system, which is expected to generate approximately 50,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each year, offsetting approximately 16% of the congregation’s existing utility usage.
“We are thrilled to be among the first religious buildings in the national capital region to install a large solar array and we hope that many others will soon follow, using the same PPA approach that we have taken with Kenergy and Altus,” said Rabbi Fred Dobb, Adat Shalom’s spiritual leader and Chairperson of Greater Washington Interfaith Power and Light.
By offsetting traditional electricity usage with clean energy, Adat Shalom takes another step forward in becoming one of the most progressive green synagogues in the DC metro area. The solar PPA structure allows Adat Shalom to save money on electricity from day one and avoid upfront capital costs while creating new green jobs in Maryland.
Altus Power Management, will finance, own, operate and maintain the solar system. “We are pleased to have invested in this project to help bring clean energy to Maryland and the region,” said Tom Athan, Co-founder of Altus Power. SH Silverblatt joins Kenergy Solar in providing a complete turnkey installation and brings nearly forty years of electrical contracting expertise from its base in Baltimore, Maryland.
The project will be partially funded by a Maryland Energy Administration grant, a US Treasury Department grant and also benefit from the Maryland Solar Renewable Energy Certificate (SREC) market, the result of Governor Martin O’Malley’s comprehensive green agenda.
Bethesda Green, the community sustainable living organization, brought the original Adat Shalom proposal to the attention of Kenergy Solar, affiliated with its Green Business Incubator.
