Aboutthe Position

The Solar Designer (Repair & Remediation Projects) isresponsible for evaluating, redesigning, and implementing engineering solutionsfor existing solar energy systems that require repairs, performance upgrades,or compliance corrections. This role involves detailed technical analysis, siteassessments, system redesign, and coordination with field teams to ensure thatrepaired or modified systems meet current codes, industry standards, andoptimal performance goals.

This position bridges engineering design, field troubleshooting, and operations support, making it essential for maintaining and enhancing thelong-term reliability and performance of solar installations.

Responsibilities:

1. System Assessment & Troubleshooting

·         Consult with Senior Energy Managers andProduction Engineers for technical reviews and site assessments ofunderperforming or malfunctioning solar systems.

·         Diagnose electrical, mechanical, ordesign-related issues impacting system output, safety, or compliance.

·         Review as-built drawings, monitoring data, andinspection reports to identify the root cause of system issues.

·         Perform root cause analysis (RCA) forrecurring problems and develop corrective action plans.

2. Repair & Remediation Design

·         Develop repair and redesign plans for damaged, degraded, or non-compliant solar installations.

·         Create or update CAD drawings, one-linediagrams, and system schematics reflecting proposed remediation work.

·         Redesign arrays or reconfigure system layoutsto improve performance, safety, and code compliance.

·         Specify replacement components (e.g., modules, inverters, racking systems, BOS equipment) that meet current standards andcompatibility requirements.

·         Work with SEOMs to ensure all redesigns arecost-effective and feasible for implementation in the field.

3. Compliance & Standards

·         Ensure all designs meet relevant codes andstandards (NEC, IEEE, IEC, UL, local AHJ requirements).

·         Update legacy solar systems to align with newelectrical codes, utility interconnection rules, or building permitrequirements.

·         Provide engineering support during AHJinspections and help resolve compliance-related deficiencies.

4. Collaboration & Coordination

·         Work closely with SEOMs and contractors toguide the implementation of repair designs.

·         Collaborate with procurement and logisticsteams to ensure timely sourcing of required materials for remediation projects.

·         Support project managers in planningschedules, cost estimates, and installation guidance for design corrections.

·         Provide technical input regarding systemdeficiencies and proposed solutions.

5. Documentation & Reporting

·         Prepare detailed engineering documentation, including revised layouts, wiring diagrams, and component specifications.

·         Generate technical reports summarizingfindings, proposed solutions, and expected system improvements post-repair.

·         Maintain accurate records of systemmodifications.

6. Performance Optimization

·         Collaborate with the Production Engineers onmonitoring data to evaluate energy production and validate system performanceimprovements after repairs.

·         Recommend upgrades (e.g., inverterreplacements, string reconfiguration, or control system updates) to enhanceproduction efficiency.

·         Collaborate with Production Engineers forenergy modeling and simulations (using tools like PVSyst or HelioScope) tovalidate expected energy gains post-remediation.

Requirements:

·         Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

·         3+ years of experience in solar PV systemdesign, engineering, or remediation projects.

·         Proven background in troubleshooting andredesigning existing solar systems.

·         Experience with PV performance modeling, codecompliance, and system retrofits.

·         Proficient in AutoCAD, HelioScope, PVSyst, orsimilar solar design tools.

·         Strong knowledge of electrical designprinciples (DC/AC wiring, grounding, inverter configurations, andinterconnection).

·         Familiarity with PV monitoring systems, dataanalytics, and SCADA platforms.

·         Understanding of structural and mechanicalaspects of solar installations (racking, roof interfaces, ballasted systems).

KeyCompetencies:

·         Analytical mindset with strong problem-solvingand diagnostic abilities.

·         Strong attention to detail and understandingof field implementation constraints.

·         Strong communication skills for collaboratingwith technicians, contractors, and clients.

·         Ability to manage multiple repair projectssimultaneously while maintaining quality and compliance standards.

WorkEnvironment:

·         Primarily office-based for design and analysiswork, with occasional site visits for assessments, inspections, orimplementation support.

·         Collaboration with field team and contractors.

·         Travel may be required to project sites acrossregions or states.
